I find it hard to believe that individuals actually like certain movies, or if it’s
just some big subconscious thing that everybody is in on. Like Avatar… okay,
the movie isn’t so bad. Dialogue is okay, and the special effects are awesome.
But is it one of the most groundbreaking, spectacular pieces of cinema? No.
Yes,
you say, it has pretty, pretty special effects. Which makes it undeniably
groundbreaking in that realm. But that’s a cinematic feature that only plays a
small part in what makes a film grand. There are many great films that don’t
have crazy awesome special effects.
That’s
why… okay I wanted to say why bad movies become big hits because it was my
first thought, but I fully include myself in this one and I enjoy many an
overblown film. My reword: I think it’s why some movies become blown out of
proportion, or turned into something they’re just not. Avatar had AMAZING
effects and that’s why everyone secretly wanted to see it. Because it looked
cool and it would be optically stimulating fun as shit to see.
What
adult wants to admit they have the same basic needs as an infant; to look at
pretty shiny things that move around a lot really fast? So everyone decides
it’s the greatest achievement in filmmaking ever. Go ahead and argue “well the
story wasn’t very original and the acting was just mediocre” and the first
thing they will say? “But the special effects are amazing!” Possibly the
second? “But James Cameron directed! He’s amazing!”
This
isn’t really a critique of society. I’m not trying to say people are sheep or
something like that. I’m merely making an observation about the way things
might work. Of course I could be wrong…. Sometimes I worry that I give humanity
the benefit of the doubt too often.
